Creating A Culture Of Creativity

Creative teams and environments can be so volatile and fragile. Bits of drama, uncertainty, lack of clarity, and an all-work-no-play atmosphere can squash any remnants of creativity you and your team have left. So how do you contribute to overcoming these obstacles? How can you begin to create a culture of creativity like never before for you and/or your team?

Here are my top five ways to cultivate what you desire most:

  1. Embrace the “creating” of this culture. This will take time, but lean into the idea that you get to CREATE something new and fresh. It just so happens that what you are creating this time is a healthy team culture that promotes creativity, ideas, failure, and trying. It takes work, but you can do this.

  2. Know your team. It’s important to remember that your team is comprised of unique individuals, each with their own set of ambitions and motivations. People are what make up a culture and you cannot cultivate that which you do not know. Use tools like the Enneagram, Strengths Finder, and good old-fashioned quality time to know your team better.

  3. Set regular rhythms. A good rhythm can establish patterns of success. Find your stride and stick with it. Nothing beats consistency. Nothing.

  4. Shake the dust off. It’s not only permissible to change things up from time to time, it’s imperative. Creatives get bored easily so take that brainstorm off-site or trade the laptops for a pencil and sketchpad.

  5. Have fun together. It’s simple: Fun inspires creativity. So the more intentional fun you can have together, the more creative you’ll be together.

Choose one of these this week. Commit to it for the next 7-days and watch the change in attitude within your team.
