What’s In Your Creative Toolbox?
The tools of a creative are as unique as the one that yields them. We like our knick-knacks, our pens and pencils, and we’re loyal evangelists of the brands we carry. It’s important as we journey onward with these tools that we assess their effectiveness from time to time.
Digital. We are forehead-deep in the digital age. With the advancement of technology like AI, computers, and phones, the limits on what we can create have never been lower. I use Substack, Squarespace, Apple, Canva, and Adobe tools almost daily to create my weekly content. From videos to graphics to articles, digital tools are sharper than ever for all of us.
Analog. Sometimes you need to walk away from the screen and bring out paper, pencil, and a fresh perspective. The self-refresh rate this exercise stimulates is worth its weight in the deep rhythms of creativity. Earlier this year, I made the switch from Asana (an online project management tool that I used for over a decade) to the Full Focus Planner for my day-to-day management and organization.
Sources for new tools. Just as important as any other tool currently in your box, it’s vital to stay connected to sources for new tools. The world is changing and evolving every day and with it comes new tools that have been refined from their ancestors or birthed into existence to bring us possibilities we never thought possible. Find your sources and stay connected to them. Fast Company, Apple, Google, and Adobe, are all great companies to watch for new tools being developed. Follow artists such as Austin Kleon, Will Doggett, or Todd Henry to get a fresh way to use new, or existing, tools.
