Give Credit. Take Blame.

One of the simplest yet most powerful declarations for leaders I have ever heard is also one that can change your team culture the most for the better.

Great leaders give credit but take blame.

Since everything rises and falls on leadership, we know the buck stops at the top. But what leaders are also tempted to do is take all or most of the credit. Hidden behind false modesty, they claim it was a team effort, but what really elevates your team culture is to raise others up solely. If you can do this consistently, you’ll be surprised at how much others want to return the favor and will begin to feel more appreciated than ever before.

I know you may be thinking, “But that’s not fair. What if it’s really NOT my fault?” It may not be directly your fault, but as a leader in your organization, it’s something you allow to happen under your watch and care. Remember, everything rises and falls on leadership.

So you want to increase the trust and honor in your team? It starts with you. It starts with giving credit and taking blame.
