The One Thing Healthy Team Culture Must Have
We’ve all been there. In a room full of people we pretend to know, in a meeting we don’t need to be in but are too insecure to speak up about it. The pressure, the awkwardness, and the unaddressed elephants in the room are all signs of an unhealthy team culture.
However, one thing must be present to get out of this rut.
Before anything else, you must be willing to be vulnerable.
It’s no longer enough to have football tables and unlimited PTO, you have to be willing to open yourself to others in the workplace. NOTHING breeds trust and a sense of unity faster than someone who will speak up about what they are genuinely feeling without fear of repercussions.
Now, we cannot go off on every employee in the name of “just being real,” but with tact, humility, and grace, we can begin to break down the walls that keep so many teams from thriving.
What is one thing you can open up about at your next meeting to set the tone in the right way? Maybe it’s an admission of guilt. Perhaps it’s a moment of genuine pride you felt during the latest win your team experienced. Maybe it’s having a difficult conversation with your teammates that you have been hoping someone else will bring up.
It starts with you. You must be willing to be vulnerable, or your team’s culture will always be restricted from being the best it could be.
