3 STeps To Finding Your Niche

At the end of 2022, I began trying to find my unique voice, and here are a few tips I learned along the way over the past year. Since then, many people have asked me, “How did you know what you’re supposed to say?” Here’s my response to that question:

  1. Find your people. I started by literally going through the contact list on my phone and choosing people I trusted, valued their opinions, and thought they would give me good, honest feedback on what I have to offer this world. This is an important step, and a worthy quest.

  2. Ask the right questions. The next thing I did was ask them very specific, open-ended questions about myself. The key here is to make it a fact-finding mission, not an ego-boosting one. I asked questions like,

    1. Have I ever said something to you or taught you anything that has stuck with you?

    2. If I were to write a book, what do you think it would be about?

    3. If I were to give a TED talk, what do you think it would be about?

    4. When you think of me, what are the first thoughts or feelings that come to mind?

  3. Look for the patterns. As the answers poured in, I kept a note on my phone of them all. From there, I looked for common themes or patterns that came up over and over again, and that’s where I leaned in.

***The rest of my story here goes like this:

I narrowed my focus down to five topics based on the answers that I received. I committed to releasing regular content/thoughts/teachings about these five topics which I did right here on this blog and on social media, podcasts, YouTube, etc for the first half of this year.

After doing that for 6-9 months I started to see a couple of trends.

  1. My passion narrowed in focus.

  2. The feedback and engagement I got were centered around 2-3 of those topics, not all 5.

  3. Clarity came in hot and I knew where to trim the fat of my content.

Since then, I’ve chosen to use two of those five as tools (mental health and enneagram), one I’ve used to start a company with my business partner, and the other two I have started claiming and naming myself as a professional.

I’m living in my niche, getting clearer and clearer each day. How about you? What’s your niche? What’s your voice? The world needs it.
